Houghton Named Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

5th-year senior Shane Houghton has been named this week's Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week.

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University fifth-year senior Shane Houghton has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for his performance last week.

Houghton set a new Landmark Conference record on a 6,000-meter course at the Lehigh University Invitational at the Goodman Campus with a time of 18:16.8, which placed him 15th of 154 runners and as the top non-NCAA Division I runner. Houghton's time took nearly 10 seconds off the previous conference mark set by Dillon Farrell '15 during the 2014 season.

"Shane really wanted this to be a special season, so he did his "homework" as we say, this summer," stated Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jesse Baumann. "He took the initiative to try bumping to 100-mile weeks a few times late in the summer and some of his 8k prep workouts in July/August showed a fitness level we've never seen from him before, with him hitting a few workouts clipping off miles well beneath 5:00 pace.  Lehigh reflected this and he ran the fastest 6k of any Moravian athlete in history, which includes former All-American Dillon Farrell and NCAA qualifier Greg Jaindl.  There's still a lot of season in front of us that he needs to stay healthy for, but the start could not have gone any better."

The Greyhounds are slated to return to the course on Friday, September 16 at the DII/DIII Challenge hosted by Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, with the men's race scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
