Moravian Splits with Scranton to Secure One of Top Two Seeds in 2022 Landmark Conference Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with The University of Scranton Friday afternoon at Blue & Grey Field, falling 7-2 in the opener before winning the nightcap, 10-2 in five innings, to secure one of the top two seeds in the 2022 Landmark Conference Tournament next weekend at a site still to be determined. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning
  • The Greyhounds answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 1-1. Sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore connected on a double off the fence in right center field, and she raced home on an RBI single to center field by sophomore designated player Emily Silberman
  • Scranton moved back in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, and the Royals tacked on four more runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-1 edge
  • Moravian scored once in the bottom of the sixth. Silberman singled with an out, and freshman pinch runner Sage Snyder eventually scored on a bases loaded RBI groundout from sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer for the final run of the contest
  • Junior Madison Hummel tossed a complete game in the circle for the Blue and Grey, and she registered four strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Royals scored twice in the top of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap
  • The Hounds answered in the bottom of the second with six runs to build a 6-2 advantage. Elmore was hit by a pitch to lead off, and she moved to third on a single off the fence in center field by Silberman. Freshman third baseman Holly Walter followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to bring Elmore across the plate. Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham ripped a two-run homer down the left field line to score Silberman. The home run was Cunningham's fourth of the season. Senior outfielder Victoria Smith drew a walk after the home run, and she scampered home on an RBI single from senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber. Elmore came back to the plate and ripped a two-RBI double to right field that scored senior catcher Brooke Wehr, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Bieber
  • Moravian pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third to extend its edge to 9-2. Walter drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Cunningham doubled to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Zettlemoyer lifted an RBI single over a drawn in infield to score Walter. Bieber hit a two-RBI single into center field as Cunningham and Zettlemoyer came home
  • The Greyhounds reached the NCAA eight-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning when Silberman connected on a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly that score Bieber, who had singled earlier in the frame
  • Cunningham made the start in the circle and improved to 14-1 on the season as she struck out four batters over the five innings 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 24 hits in the doubleheader with Elmore going 4-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs. Bieber was 4-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs, and she had four assists in the field to move into second in school history with 310 career assists
  • Cunningham was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and a homer, and she has 10 hits on the season with six for extra bases including four homers and a pair of doubles. Silberman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run while Wehr had three hits and a run
  • Zettlemoyer and Walter each collected two hits with Zettlemoyer adding two RBIs and a run and Walter driving a run and scoring once. Smith, senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy and freshman first baseman Lindsay Gawrys all had a hit with Smith scoring once
