Moravian Women Hold Off Juniata's Second Half Rally For Landmark Conference Road Win

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team saw 17-point lead early in the second half get cut to three points with just over two and a half minutes to go before the Greyhounds connected on seven free throws in the final minute to post a 68-57 Landmark Conference victory at Juniata College Friday evening as the Hounds improved to 2-0 on the year and won their conference opener.

  • Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk: "It was a great win on the road to begin conference play. Our defense was intense, and Morgan Amy made tremendous plays on both ends of the court. Kayla Yoegel sparked us on offense and Emily Markowski came off the bench and gave us good energy. We withstood their 2nd half run and finished the game at the foul line.

How It Happened

  • Junior guard Kayla Yoegel scored the opening two points of the game, and sophomore guard Morgan Amy gave the Hounds the lead for good at the 9:13 mark with her first basket of the game. The Greyhounds would stretch the lead out to seven points at 15-8 as Morgan Amy hit a buzzer beater to end the first quarter
  • The Blue & Grey outscored the Eagles 16-8 in the second quarter to head to the locker room with a 31-16 edge
  • Freshman forward Sam Osorio hit a jumper to start the second half to give the Hounds their 17-point lead but eight and a half minutes later, Juniata had moved back with five points at 40-35. Moravian answered with the final five points of the quarter to lead 45-35 after 30 minutes of action.
  • Juniata eventually closed the gap to three points at 57-54 with 2:32 left on the clock. However, the Greyhounds finished the game with an 11-3 run to earn the victory 

Firsts for the Hounds

  • Sophomore guard Madison Amy saw her first action of the season for Moravian, as did senior forward Jordan Beneducci 
  • Freshman forward Rachel Sutton scored her first two collegiate points in the game

Inside the Numbers

  • Morgan Amy and Yoegel each netted a career high 21 points in the contest and were the only two Hounds in double figures. Amy eclipsed her previous career best by 10 points while Yoegel better her previous career high by one point
  • Sophomore forward Emily Markowski tied her career high with nine rebounds
  • Both teams made 23 field goals and four three-pointers in the contest, so the difference was the foul line where Moravian was 18-for-21 while the Eagles were just 7-for-9
  • The Blue & Grey forced Juniata into 19 turnovers while committing just 12 turnovers in the game
