ANNVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad had a three-point halftime lead before pulling away in the final 10 minutes for a 77-60 victory at Lebanon Valley College Saturday afternoon in the Hounds' final non-conference road game of the season.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a free throw from graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel, and lay-ups by graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi had the Hounds up 5-0 two and a half minutes into action. The Flying Dutchmen rallied to tie the game at 9-9 before a lay-up by junior forward Sam Osorio and a jumper by senior guard Morgan Amy had Moravian up 13-9. The Blue & Grey finished the quarter with a 12-1 run after LVC tied the game to hold a 21-10 advantage after 10 minutes of action
- Freshman guard Jayda Cartagena hit a jumper to start the second quarter to extend the run and push the lead to 23-10. Yoegel connected on a pair of free throws for a 25-12 edge before the Flying Dutchmen ran off eight straight points to pull within five at 25-20 with 7:25 still to play in the quarter. Zamolyi snapped the LVC run with a three-pointer, but the Lebanon Valley made it a five-point game again at 32-27. The Flying Dutchmen hit a late jumper to pull within three as Moravian headed to the locker room with a 34-31 lead
- LVC netted the first four points of the second half before sophomore forward Brielle Guarente connected on a driving lay-up to put the Hounds back ahead 36-35. The squads traded baskets and the score was tied at 39-39 when Moravian ran off seven straight points to hold a 46-39 edge after a lay-up from Guarente. The Flying Dutchmen answered with a pair of baskets; however, the Hounds had a 50-45 lead after 30 minutes of action after two late free throws from Zamolyi to end the third quarter
- Yoegel drained a pull-up jumper to start the fourth quarter for the Blue & Grey, and two free throws by Catagena stretched the edge to 54-45 less than a minute into the period. Zamolyi pushed the Greyhounds' advantage back into double digits for the first time since the second quarter with a lay-up before the Flying Dutchmen netted their first points of the final quarter. Moravian led 62-49 after a turnaround jumper from Osorio when LVC netted five straight points to close the gap to eight points with 5:17 remaining. Amy connected on a lay-up to push the lead back into double digits with just under five minutes on the clock. The Hounds led by 15 points at 72-57 after a pair of free throws from senior forward Emily Marowski with 2:25 to go to put the game out of reach
Inside the Numbers
- The Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by Yoegel, who netted a team-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists, while Zamolyi had her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to go with two assists
- Osorio tossed in 14 points and grabbed six boards while Markowski had 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists
- Guarente finished with six points and four rebounds while Cartagena netted a career-high six points with a pair of assists
- Amy contributed six assists, four points and two rebounds while freshman guard Sarah Miniter scored the first two points of her career with the Hounds
- Moravian shot 31-of-63 from the field, 1-for-7 beyond the three-point line and 14-for-17 at the foul line in the contest
- The Hounds had a 42-32 edge on the boards, and the Blue & Grey forced LVC into 17 turnovers while committing just 14 miscues
