Hounds Defeat Coast Guard to Give Head Coach Caroline Pape First Win & Strohl Nets 100th Career Goal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad earned its first win under the direction of first-year Head Coach Caroline Pape with a 16-12 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy in non-conference action on John Makuvek Field Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Junior midfielder Megan Donnelly scored twice in the first 4:43 before senior Eliza Fantazzi found the goal. Senior midfielder Lindsey Strohl added a pair of goals before the Bears tallied their first marker of the afternoon. Strohl found the net twice more with her fourth goal at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter making her the eighth player in program history to reach 100 career goals. Coast Guard scored once more to cut the Hounds' edge to 7-2 after 15 minutes of action
  • The Blue and Grey opened the second quarter with goals from freshman attack Jackie Salvatore and Strohl for a 9-2 advantage. The Bears answered with three straight goals to cut the deficit to 9-5. Senior attack Kelsey Moore hit the net with a goal for Moravian, and both Fantazzi and Salvatore scored before the end of the half to send the Greyhounds to the intermission with a 12-6 lead
  • The Bears began the second half with two goals to get within 12-8 before Donnelly and junior attack Devin King both scored for the Hounds. Fantazzi and Strohl also had goals in the third quarter to give the Blue and Grey a 16-10 lead after 45 minutes of play
  • Coast Guard netted the only two goals in the fourth quarter while holding the Greyhounds scoreless 

Inside the Numbers

  • Strohl led Moravian with six goals to go with seven draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Donnelly had three goals, an assist and three draw controls. Fantazzi added a hat trick while Salvatore contributed two goals and an assist
  • King had a team-high three assists to go with her goal while Moore had one goal
  • Senior defender Samantha Cherenson contributed four ground balls and three caused turnovers while senior defender Jamie Bader had three ground balls and junior midfielder Emily Hoskin added six draw controls
  • Junior goalie Brelyn Friedman recorded two saves and had one ground ball in the first half of the contest while junior goalie Rylee Soltis posted two saves and scooped up two ground balls in the second half
  • Coast Guard had a 29-28 edge in shots while the Blue and Grey held a 15-11 advantage in ground balls and a 17-15 edge in draw controls. Moravian was also 14-for-19 on clearing attempts
