Moravian Rallies to Win Marathon Match Versus Scranton & Capture the 2021 Landmark Conference Title

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The top seeded Moravian College women's tennis squad rallied from a 3-0 deficit after doubles action and endured four three-set matches in singles to earn a 5-4 victory over second seed The University of Scranton in Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse Sunday in a match that took over nine hours to play with the teams limited to just two courts. 

How It Happened

  • Scranton took a 3-0 lead in doubles action by sweeping all three contests. Seniors Emma Angle and Mary Angle fell in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-4) at first doubles while sophomores Julianne Cassady and Cristina Merone fought back to trail 5-4 in their third doubles match before falling 8-5
  • The Greyhounds would earn their first point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Emma Angle at first singles to cut the deficit to 3-1
  • The Blue and Grey moved within 3-2 after a 6-1, 6-2 victory from senior Brooke Adams at third singles
  • Moravian tied the match at 3-3 when Mary Angle completed a three-set win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 at second singles
  • The Hounds took a 4-3 lead with their fourth consecutive victory in singles as senior Kristen Cassidy recorded a 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-0 triumph at fifth singles
  • Just a minute or so later, the Royals tied the match at 4-4 with a three-set win at fourth singles
  • The contest came down to the sixth singles match, which began nearly seven hours after the doubles started, and sophomore Maddie Figiel earned a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory to clinch the title. After the match, Figiel was named the 2021 Landmark Conference Tournament's Most Valuable Player

Landmark Conference Championship History

  • The Greyhounds earned their fifth Landmark Conference Championship match since the conference began during the 2007-08 season. Moravian has been the top seed during all five championship seasons
  • Moravian and Scranton have faced off four times for the Landmark Conference title with the Hounds winning all four times
  • The Hounds advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth time, and the program picked up its first NCAA Tournament win in 2019 after the Blue and Grey's last conference title
