BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University has elevated Mariana Freitas to Director of Tennis effective immediately.

"I am pleased to announce Mariana Freitas as the new Moravian University Tennis Director," stated Director of Athletics & Recreation Mary Beth Spirk. "Mariana has been a vital cog in the success of both men's and women's programs over the past seven years as an assistant coach. We are fortunate to have Mariana join our staff on a full-time basis. She has a strong tennis pedigree, tremendous work ethic and great relationship with our student athletes."

Freitas has been at Moravian for the last seven seasons serving as an assistant coach for both tennis squads, and she had been in the role as the interim director of the programs since early May, guiding the women's team to the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship and a victory in the NCAA Division III Tournament First Round.

"I am extremely excited and honored to be named the Director of Men's and Women's Tennis at Moravian University," noted Freitas. "I am especially grateful to Coach Mary Beth Spirk, Jon Conrad, Dr. Nicole Loyd, and the Moravian community for this opportunity. This is truly a dream come true for me, and I can't wait to get started."

A Lisbon, Portugal native, Freitas attended the University of West Alabama for two years, where she earned All-Conference and All-Academic teams and was chosen by her teammates to serve as captain. She transferred to Tarleton State University in Texas where again she earned All-Conference Honorable Mention, All-Conference and All-Academic honors. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Biology, Freitas was asked to join the coaching staff at Tarleton while she earned her Master of Biological Sciences.
