Top 10 Exciting Games of 2021-22 - No. 10 - Baseball Walks Off with Win over NJCU

The Greyhounds celebrate a run in a win over New Jersey City University for No. 10 in the Top 10 Exciting Games of 2021-22.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is going to take a look back at its 2021-22 athletic campaign over the next two months with a pair of top 10 lists voted on by the athletic administration.

The first list starting today will be the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year with a look at our No. 10 highlight – the baseball team scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 7-6 walk-off win over visiting New Jersey City University at Gillespie Field in the Greyhounds' 2022 home opener on March 17.

The victory was the first of 11 at home this spring for the Hounds in 15 home contests.

Moravian fell behind early before taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run homer from junior catcher Derek Holmes. The Blue and Grey led 3-2 after an RBI single from junior second baseman Chris Pow in the sixth inning; however, the Gothic Knights led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

The Greyhounds rallied for three runs and the win in the final inning as they battled NJCU and daylight in the game played in mid-March. Pow and Holmes hit back-to-back singles up the middle to start the comeback before graduate student Brett Moyer ripped a two-RBI double off the fence in right centerfield to knot the score at 6-6. Sophomore Patrick Benolken came on to pinch run for Moyer, and he moved 90 feet away from scoring on a ground out by sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski. Benolken raced home with the winning run on a ground ball by sophomore designated hitter Connor Wengryn.
