Top 10 Exciting Games of 2021-22 – No. 4 Baseball Scores Twice in the Ninth for a Walk-Off Win over Muhlenberg

Elias Engelhardt celebrates after hitting winning single versus Muhlenberg College

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2021-22 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 4 highlight – the baseball squad scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 9-8 walk-off win over rival Muhlenberg College at Gillespie Field on April 6.

The victory was one of seven one-run triumphs for the Greyhounds in 2022, a season that saw the squad post a 22-18 overall mark. The win was also one of four walk-off victories.

The Mules scored single runs in the first and second innings to build a 2-0 edge while Moravian would get on the scoreboard in the second innings on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior third baseman David Bertolotti.

The Hounds plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Bertolotti scored the first run of the frame on an error while sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan hit an RBI single as the Blue and Grey moved in front. Junior shortstop Mason Fisher connected on a three-run homer to finish off the inning.

Muhlenberg answered with its own five-run inning in the top of the seventh as the Mules moved back in front 7-6.

In the home half of the seventh, graduate student Brett Moyer ripped an RBI single to tie the contest at 7-7. The Mules plated a run in the top of the eighth to move back ahead 8-7.

Moravian scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the victory. Madigan led off with a single, and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fisher. Junior second baseman Chris Pow was hit by a pitch before freshman Ayden Dunbar came on to pinch run. Moyer flew out to left field for the second out of the inning, but the ball was deep enough for Madigan to race to third. Junior designated hitter Derek Holmes connected on an RBI single through the right side as Madigan scored to tie the game and Dunbar raced to third. Senior outfielder Elias Engelhardt stepped into the batter's box and ripped a single down the left field line to chase Dunbar across the plate with the winning run.
