BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2021-22 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 2 highlight – the field hockey squad defeating No. 20 Susquehanna University, 3-2 in overtime, on October 9.
The victory was the field hockey program's first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent and was the fifth triumph in the Greyhounds' school record 10-match winning streak. The contest is the second on the countdown (https://www.moraviansports.com/general/2021-22/releases/20220613ggxp0y) for the field hockey team that has the best season in school history with a 14-3 overall record, a 6-1 Landmark Conference slate and earned the top seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
The River Hawks opened the scoring just 3:37 into the contest and led 1-0 after 15 minutes of action.
Moravian scored twice in the second quarter to take a 2-1 edge. Freshman forward Sydney Anderson knotted the match at 1-1 in the 22nd minute as she knocked in a rebound off of the post, and Anderson scored again with just 44 seconds left in the half as she tapped in a penalty corner from junior midfielder Maddie Call.
Neither squad was able to find the cage in the third quarter, and Susquehanna netted the tying goal with 1:45 on the clock to force overtime.
Anderson headed in a breakaway three quarters of the way through the first overtime and reverse chipped the winning goal for the first hat trick of her career. Junior goalie Brooke Wilkinson registered six saves in the victory.
