Top 10 Games of 2022-23 - #4 Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Buzzer Beater Versus Albright

Hounds celebrate buzzer beating win over Albright College

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 4 highlight – the women's basketball team topping Albright College, 66-64, on a buzzer-beater to begin the 2022-23 season.

The contest played in Johnston Hall on November 8 featured two buzzer-beating shots from graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi in her first game with the Greyhounds.

The Blue & Grey netted the first seven points of the game, and the squad led 23-14 after the first quarter of play. However, Moravian would not score for the first six minutes of the second quarter as the Lions netted 11 straight points to go ahead 25-23. The Hounds tied the game on a lay-up from Zamoyli, and she set the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 34-30 lead as she drained a three-pointer from near halfcourt in front of the scorer's table to beat the clock for the first time in the game.

The third quarter went back-and-forth with Albright leading 47-43 after 30 minutes of action. The Lions extended their edge to 54-47 early in the fourth quarter before Moravian began to close the gap. Zamoyli tied the game at 61-61 with just over a minute remaining, and she gave the Hounds a 63-62 advantage with 35 seconds on the clock. Senior forward Emily Markowski made it 64-62 with a free throw with three seconds left while the Albright drilled two free throws a second later to knot the score again.

The Greyhounds called a timeout to move the ball to the frontcourt opposite the Blue & Grey bench. Sophomore forward Brielle Guarente threw the inbound pass to Zamolyi on a cut to the basket, and Zamolyi laid the ball up just before the horn sounded and the shot fell in for the 66-64 victory.

Zamolyi finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Moravian while graduate student Kayla Yoegel tossed in 12 points and Guarente scored 10 points in the contest.
