Mariano, Soltys Pitch Greyhounds Past Scranton, 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team used strong pitching performances from juniors Thomas Mariano and Chris Soltys to earn a 2-1 victory over The University of Scranton in the final game of the Landmark Conference series at Gillespie Field Sunday.

Marino tossed the first seven innings and allowed a run on four hits and three walks to go with one strikeout as he improved to 4-3 on the mound this season for the Greyhounds. Soltys threw the final two innings for his third save of the season with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman outfielder Jimmy McCarthy led off with an infield single, and after an out sophomore outfielder Matt Hanson had another infield single. McCarthy and Hanson moved up a base on a wild pitch before freshman first baseman Charles Savite hit an RBI fielder's choice to score McCarthy. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Luke followed with an RBI bunt single to send Hanson across the plate. Moravian left the bases loaded in the inning with four hits, none leaving the infield.

Scranton got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 2-1. Junior outfielder Michael Gaeta drew a walk with two outs and scored on an RBI single by senior shortstop Tim LeCompte.

Moravian left a total of 11 runners on base in the game as the Greyhounds had a 12-4 advantage in hits. Freshman catcher Mike Roethke was three-for-four for Moravian while Hanson and Luke were both two-for-four. Freshman second baseman Alex Bull was two-for-two for the Greyhounds while senior catcher Michael Amturo led Scranton, which left six runners on base, with a two-for-two performance at the plate.

Scranton senior Corey Gorman tossed a complete game with two runs on 12 hits and a walk to go with 12 strikeouts in the contest.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 18th in a non-conference game at Misericordia University starting at 4:00 p.m.
