Greyhounds Score 24 Runs in Landmark Conference Sweep at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College Saturday, winning the first game 11-1 and taking the night cap 13-2.

The Greyhounds, who evened their Landmark Conference record at 3-3 and are now 6-12 on the season after winning four straight, scored 11 runs in the first game on just eight hits with no one collecting more than one hit. Sophomore designated hitter Mike Mittl and sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig each had two RBIs in the game while freshman left fielder Carmine Palummo scored three times and senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello crossed the plate twice to move into fifth in school history with 120 runs scored.

Junior Ryan Kahn earned his first win of the season on the mound, allowing a run on six hits to go with eight strikeouts as he moved into 10th in school history with 110 strikeouts.

Moravian would give Kahn all the offense he needed with three runs in the top of the first inning with two runs scoring on errors and another on an RBI fielder's choice by Mittl. The Blue and Grey extended the lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single off of Mittl's bat and an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Tim Heard.

The Eagles scored their lone run in the bottom of the third. Moravian answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning on a passed ball, an RBI single by Gaetaniello and an RBI double from Kulig. The Hounds added a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Kulig after junior Joey Maker had doubled as a pinch hitter. The Greyhounds finished off the scoring in the opener with two runs in the top of the seventh frame on another passed ball and a RBI ground out by sophomore shortstop Joey Ferolie.

Moravian pounded out 18 hits in the second game with Gaetaniello going 5-for-5 with five runs to tie the school record for a game and to move into a tie for fourth at 125 runs scored in his career, and he also had four RBIs, a double and a homer. Maker was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while sophomore right fielder Austin Markowski was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Palummo and freshman second baseman Ian Csencsits were both 2-for-4 while Kulig added two more RBIs.

Sophomore Rhett Jacoby earned the win on the mound for Moravian to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jacoby allowed two unearned runs on six hits and a walk to go with 10 strikeouts.

The Hounds opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Gaetaniello and an RBI fielder's choice from Kulig. Moravian pushed the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the third inning. Gaetaniello, Kulig and Markowski led of the frame with three straight doubles before an RBI single from Maker and a Juniata error.

The Blue and Grey added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Maker, and the Greyhounds pushed five runs across the plate in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 12-0. Gaetaniello connected on a two-RBI single before an error scored a run. Markowski would hit an RBI sacrifice fly and Maker added another RBI single in the inning.

Gaetnaiello finished off the scoring with a solo home run, his first homer of the season and second of his career.

Moravian is scheduled to close out its three-game Landmark Conference series at Juniata College on Sunday, April 2 with a nine-inning game beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Huntingdon.
