TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior outfielder Ian Csencsits has been named one of the Landmark Conference Baseball Athletes of the Week.
With the unprecedented cancellation of spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Landmark Conference will be recognizing an athlete from each member institution in each conference-sponsored spring sport for the remainder of the academic year. Honorees were nominated for recognition by their respective institution based on achievements from the shortened season and career accolades.
Csencsits was hitting .371 for the Greyhounds this spring before the season ended. He was 13-for-35 in 10 games with 15 runs, four doubles, a triple, a homer and 15 RBIs. Csencsits ended his career with a .357 batting average, fourth in program history, 111 runs scored, tenth all-time, and 142 hits, ranking 15th in school history, to go along with 23 doubles, eight triples, tied for seventh in program history, three home runs, 67 RBIs, 66 walks, tied for seventh in school history, five stolen bases, a .480 slugging percentage, tenth in program history, and a .463 on-base percentage, second all-time. Csencsits, who was a two-time Landmark All-Conference First Team honoree before moving to the outfield in 2020, had 291 putouts and 216 assists, tenth in program history, in 526 chances in the field over 116 games played.
"Ian had a tremendous start to his senior season," commented Head Coach Paul Engelhardt. "As a returning two-time 1st Team All-Conference selection, Ian had every opportunity to be the best in the Landmark. His strong showing only makes it more difficult to manage how this spring has turned. Every athlete, every sport, in every division has lost the opportunity to compete at their highest level. It's unfortunate for thousands of young men and women.
"Ian represents the best," continued Engelhardt. "A three-time captain, on a path to leave with top numbers in most every category. Every school has an athlete like Ian every couple of years. It comes down to what makes a player different. Ian played baseball. Ian's season to date couldn't be better. His past demonstrates what he could have accomplished this season. Athlete of the week, his career, and how he moves forward. Here's hoping every coach has an opportunity to coach someone like Ian again.
"All my seniors navigated this spring as best as possible. If a team, or player(s) show their character under stress, this group of seniors, including Ian, have helped guide how this program will return," finished Engelhardt.
