Greyhounds Drop Landmark Conference Doubleheader at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad dropped a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Wilkes University Sunday, falling 6-3 and 9-5. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and Wilkes added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 4-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Senior first baseman Cole Cherkas led off with an infield single, and he trotted home on a bases loaded walk from freshman catcher Wyatt Harrar
  • The Colonels put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh to push the advantage to 6-1
  • Moravian finished off the scoring in the top of the ninth frame with two runs. Junior third baseman Ayden Dunbar drew a leadoff walk while senior center fielder Matt Madigan connected on a two-run homer, the first home run of his career
  • Senior David Ciaccio made the start on the mound and allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits to go with seven strikeouts in five innings of action. Freshman Ryan Hoffman tossed the final three innings with two runs on three hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Colonels scored first again in the second contest with two runs in the bottom of the third, and Wilkes added a run in the fourth frame for a 3-0 edge
  • The Blue & Grey plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one at 3-2. Senior left fielder David Olsakowski drew a one out walk and moved to third on a double off Madigan's bat. Cherkas connected on an RBI infield single to bring in Olsakowski while freshman right fielder Jared Ferguson had an RBI fielder's choice to score Madigan
  • Wilkes countered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead back to five runs at 7-2
  • Moravian scored once in the top of the seventh as Madigan singled with one out and raced home on an RBI groundout from senior shortstop Paul Croyle
  • The Greyhounds added two more runs in the top of the eighth to pull within 7-5. Graduate student second baseman Chris Pow hit a ground rule double to start the inning, and he crossed the plate on an RBI single from Dunbar. Senior catcher Connor Wengryn, who had reached on an error after Pow's double, raced home on an RBI groundout from Cherkas
  • The Colonels finished off the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth frame
  • The Hounds used six pitchers in the game with sophomore Ross Huffman making the start and allowing five runs, three earned on eight hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of action. Freshman Aidan Lane tossed a third of an inning with two unearned runs on three hits while freshmen Nate McBride and Antorius Cofield both recording one strikeout in an inning of action. Freshman Wes Griffith faced three batters and allowed two runs on a walk while senior Aaron Flyte tossed the final inning with one hit allowed

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 hits in the doubleheader with Madigan going 5-for-8 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and a homer
  • Cherkas had a pair of hits with a run and two RBIs while Dunbar had a hit, a run and an RBI
  • Pow added a double and a run while Olsakowski had one hit and a run
  • Croyle contributed a hit and an RBI while Ferguson and Hoffman each had a hit and Wengryn scored once
