Greyhounds Split with Catholic to Start Landmark Conference Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with The Catholic University of America to begin a conference series at Gillespie Field, winning the opener 8-6 before falling 1-0 in the nightcap Saturday. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener, and Catholic added two runs in the fourth frame for a 6-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds answered with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Senior center fielder Matt Madigan led off with a single and stole second base before racing home on an RBI double from graduate student designated hitter Chris Pow. Pow moved to third on a wild pitch, and he scored on an RBI single from senior shortstop Paul Croyle. Senior left fielder David Olsakowski and graduate student second baseman Paul Hamilton each drew walks to load the bases before freshman catcher Wyatt Harrar connected on a grand slam to tie the game. It was Harrar's second homer of the season. Junior third baseman Nick Henry followed with a double, and he scored the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by Pow
  • Moravian tacked on run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Croyle led off with a single and raced home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Harrar
  • Sophomore Ross Huffman earned the win on the mound as he allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in six innings of action. Graduate student Ethan Weber tossed an inning with a hit, two walks and a strikeout while freshman Nick Leonard pitched the final two innings for his first career save with a pair of hits and two strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Catholic scored the only run of the second game in the top of the first inning
  • Senior Aaron Flyte made the start on the mound for the Blue & Grey and allowed a run on six hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts in seven innings of action
  • Freshman Nate McBride tossed an inning with a walk while freshman Antorius Cofield registered a strikeout and gave up a hit in one inning of work 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 12 hits on the day with Croyle collecting two hits to go with two runs and an RBI
  • Madigan also had two hits with a run while Pow contributed two hit, a run, a double and an RBI
  • Harrar had one hit, a run, five RBIs and a homer while Henry added a hit and a run
  • Hamilton and Olsakowski both also posted a hit and a run while senior catcher Connor Wengryn and senior first baseman Cole Cherkas each had a hit
