Moravian Falls to Catholic on Senior Day at Gillespie Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad fell to visiting The Catholic University of America, 6-2, in the final game of a Landmark Conference series at Gillespie Field as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day Sunday.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals scored the opening run of the contest in the top of the second inning, and Catholic added a run in the top of the third for a 2-0 edge
  • The Hounds broke onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make 2-1. Senior shortstop Paul Croyle led off with a single and stole second base. Croyle raced home on an RBI single from junior third baseman Nick Henry
  • The Cardinals countered with two runs in the seventh inning to stretch the advantage to 4-1
  • Moravian put a single run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth as graduate student second baseman Paul Hamilton connected on a solo homer off the scoreboard in right field for his fourth home run of the season
  • Catholic added two more runs in the top of the ninth to finish off the scoring
  • Prior to the start of the game, the Greyhounds honored seniors Patrick Benolken, Cole Cherkas, David Ciaccio, Paul Croyle, Aaron Flyte, Matt Madigan, Rony Minier, David Olsakowski and Connor Wengryn and graduate student Paul Hamilton for their careers with the program 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine hits in the game with Henry and graduate student Chris Pow were both 2-for-4 with Henry driving in a run
  • Hamilton contributed a hit, a run and a homer while Croyle finished with a hit and a run
  • Senior center fielder Matt Madigan, senior first baseman Cole Cherkas and senior catcher Connor Wengryn all had one hit
  • Senior David Ciaccio made the start on the mound and allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts in seven innings of action. Senior Rony Minier tossed 1.1 innings with two runs on two hits and a walk while freshman Nick Leonard pitched the final two-thirds of an inning with a hit
