Greyhounds Drop Landmark Conference Doubleheader at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad dropped a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton Saturday, falling 8-5 and 12-3.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning to start the day. Freshman right fielder Jared Ferguson led off with a single, and he moved to third on a double from freshman catcher Wyatt Harrar. Graduate student designated hitter Chris Pow followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ferguson while senior first baseman Cole Cherkas connected on an RBI single to bring in Harrar
  • The Royals countered with three runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 3-2
  • The Blue & Grey retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third frame. Harrar and Pow singled with one out, and Cherkas drew a walk to load the bases. Junior third baseman Nick Henry ripped a two-RBI single that brought in Harrar and Pow
  • Moravian pushed the advantage to 5-3 with a run in the top of the fifth as Pow singled and raced to third on a double by Cherkas. Senior shortstop Paul Croyle chased Pow home with an RBI sacrifice fly
  • Scranton retook a one-run edge with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning
  • The Royals added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring
  • Sophomore Ross Huffman started on the mound for the Hounds, and he allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts in five innings of action. Freshman Antorius Cofield tossed an inning with two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk to go with one strikeout while graduate student Noah Ingalls pitched the final two innings with a hit and a pair of strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Scranton pushed three runs home in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest for a quick 3-0 edge, and the Royals added a run in the second and two more in the third frame for a 6-0 advantage
  • Moravian got onto the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior left fielder Connor Wengryn started the inning with a single while senior center fielder David Olsakowski was hit by a pitch. Pow connected on a sacrifice fly to score Wengryn while Cherkas ripped an RBI double to send Olsakowski home. Harrar, who had been hit by a pitch, scored the final run of the frame on an RBI single by Henry
  • The Royals countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Scranton finished off the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the seventh
  • Senior Aaron Flyte made the start on the hill for the Blue & Grey, and he allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk to go with one strikeout in two innings of action. Freshman Andrew Benvenuto tossed 1.2 innings with two walks and a hit while graduate student Ethan Weber pitched 1.1 innings with two unearned runs on a hit and a walk. Junior Chris Medei tossed an inning with a hit while freshman Aidan Lane pitched a third of an inning with four runs on three walks and two hits. Sophomore Max Sponheimer tossed two thirds of an inning with a walk. Freshman Ryan Hoffman pitched the final inning with two hits and a walk 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits on the day with Cherkas going 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and two doubles
  • Pow was 3-for-6 with two tuns and two RBIs while Henry had a pair of hits with three RBIs
  • Ferguson contributed two hits and a run while Harrar added two hits with a double, and he scored three runs
  • Wengryn registered two hits and a run while Olsakowski had a hit and a run and Croyle added an RBI
