Moravian Falls at Delaware Valley in Final Road Non-Conference Game of the Season

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball team fell to host Delaware Valley University, 81-76, in the Hounds' final non-conference road game of the 2022-23 season Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Aggies hit the opening three-pointer of the game while graduate student guard Danny Cooper sank two free throws to get the Greyhounds on the scoreboard and junior guard Alex Dietz hit a free throw to knot the score at 3-3. Delaware Valley scored five straight and pushed out to a 14-7 edge before Moravian closed within three points at 14-11 on a free throw from sophomore guard/forward Michael Leonardo at the 14:25 mark. The Aggies answered with a 13-5 run to take a 27-16 edge midway through the opening half
  • Delaware Valley had a 28-20 advantage when the Blue & Grey ran off seven straight points with junior forward Mike DiPietro making it a one-point game at 28-27 on a lay-up with 7:40 to go in the first half. The Aggies pushed the edge back to five points before the Hounds got within a point at 34-33 on a lay-up from freshman forward Uma Kalu at the 4:51 mark. However, Moravian would not score again as Delaware Valley finished the half with an 11-0 run to head to the locker room with a 45-33 lead
  • The Aggies scored the first three points of the second half before a lay-up from Dietz put the Hounds on the scoreboard in the second half. The Blue and Grey closed within five points at 52-47 on a lay-up by freshman forward Marquis Ratcliff at the 14:37 mark. Delaware Valley answered and made it an 11-point game again at 61-50 while the Greyhounds netted five points to make it 61-55 after a lay-up from Cooper with 10:26 remaining
  • Delaware Valley pushed the advantage back into double digits at 65-55 with 8:49 on the clock when Moravian began to slowly chip away, eventually pulling within two points at 67-65 at the 4:27 mark on a three-pointer by Cooper. The Greyhounds got the deficit down to two points on three other occasions, the final time at 78-76 after another three-pointer from Cooper with seven seconds remaining. However, the Aggies sank three free throws in the final 4.7 seconds to end the contest 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures with Cooper netting a game-high 20 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Kalu and Leonardo both reached double digits for the first time in their careers with Kalu netting 12 points to go with two boards and Leonardo adding 10 points, three assists and three boards
  • Dietz finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Ratcliff had eight points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Porter Kelly also scored eight points to go with four assist and a pair of rebounds
  • Sophomore forward Nate Santiago contributed five points and five boards while DiPietro posted four points and three rebounds and senior guard Nate Dougherty added four assists and two rebounds
  • The Greyhounds shot 28-of-59 from the field, 8-of-27 on three-pointers and 12-of-21 at the foul line
  • The Hounds held a 41-23 edge on the boards in the contest
