Greyhounds Fall Late at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad had an 11-point lead early in the second half before falling late to host Goucher College by a point, 69-68, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds opened the scoring with a three-pointer from junior guard/forward Michael Leonardo while the Gophers took an 8-6 lead five minutes into the contest. Moravian countered and led 11-8 on a jumper from junior forward Gary Francis two minutes later
  • The Gophers put together a 18-5 run to build a 26-16 advantage with just over seven and a half minutes until the intermission. The Blue & Grey answered with a 21-6 run to end the half and head to the locker room with a 37-32 lead
  • Senior guard Alex Dietz had a lay-up to start the half, and another three-pointer from Leonardo had the Hounds up 43-32 just a minute into the second half. Moravian was up 45-34 after a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Marquis Ratcliff before Goucher ran off ten straight points to get within one at 45-44 with 15:56 on the clock
  • The Blue & Grey held onto the lead until the 7:21 mark when the Gophers moved in front 57-56. Sophomore guard Porter Kelly connected on a jumper to briefly put the Hounds back ahead by a point until an 8-0 run by Goucher had the Gophers in the lead for good. Moravian did get within a point at 69-68 with two seconds remaining on a put back from Francis, and the Hounds had the ball at the end of the game but were unable to get off a final shot before the buzzer ended the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures with Leonardo and Ratcliff both netting 15 points. Ratcliff added 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season and 17th of his career to go with four assists while Leonardo grabbed eight boards
  • Francis registered 14 points and nine rebounds while Kelly had ten points and five rebounds
  • Dietz finished with five points and three assists while senior guard Mark Howell added five points and a pair of assists
  • Sophomore forward Uma Kalu contributed three points and three boards while freshman guard Taylor Perlmutter had one point
  • The Hounds shot 24-for-55 from the field, 7-for-19 beyond the three-point line and 13-for-24 at the charity stripe
  • Both squads registered 41 rebounds in the game
