Moravian Nearly Rallies from 22-Point Deficit in Three-Point Loss at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball team trailed host Elizabethtown College by 22 points less than a minute into the second half, but the Greyhounds closed within a point in the final minute before falling 68-65 in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays scored the first four points of the game before baskets from sophomore forward Marquis Ratcliff and senior guard Mark Howell knotted the score at 4-4 at the 16:47 mark. Elizabethtown netted the next seven points to pull ahead 11-4. The Blue & Grey got back within a point at 17-16 on a jumper from junior forward Gary Francis with 9:10 left in the half
  • Elizabethtown countered with a 19-5 run to build a 36-21 edge with just over four minutes until the intermission. The Blue Jays took a 43-26 advantage to the locker room
  • ETown tossed in the first five points of the second half to stretch its lead to 22 points at 48-26 with 19:01 remaining. The Hounds put together a 25-4 run to close within a point at 52-51 with 7:19 still to play after Ratcliff sank a free throw
  • The Blue Jays made the advantage six, and Elizabethtown was up four points in the final minute when a three-point play from Howell cut the deficit to one again at 66-65. The Blue Jays sank a pair of free throws to lead. Moravian had the ball in front of its bench with 0.9 seconds on the clock. Junior guard/forward Michael Leonardo would get off a turnaround three-point shot in an attempt to force overtime but the shot bounced off the rim as the horn sounded

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures with Ratcliff recording his ninth double-double of the season and 18th of his career with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Ratcliff also had four blocked shots to become the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career blocked shots, now with 102
  • Howell also tossed in 15 points, for a new career high, while senior guard Filippo Baldo netted a career-best 11 points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds
  • Leonardo finished with eight points to go along with ten boards, four assists and a pair of blocked shots while freshman guard Taylor Perlmutter had five points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Francis registered four points and two boards while sophomore forward Liam Cummiskey had three points, two rebounds and a pair of assists
  • Freshman center Brendan Shannon contributed two points and two rebounds while sophomore guard/forward Joe Dupuis had two points
  • The Greyhounds shot 23-for-64 from the floor, 6-for-27 beyond the three-point ling and 13-for-20 at the foul line, and the Blue & Grey held a 44-41 edge on the boards including 11-7 on the offensive glass
