Greyhounds Use Quick Start to Top Wilkes in 2024 Landmark Conference Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 first half lead as the Hounds topped visiting Wilkes University, 13-3, to start the 2024 Landmark Conference season on a rainy John Makuvek Field Saturday. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds needed 43 seconds to take the lead as senior attack Trevor Dzama found the net off a pass from graduate student attack Connor James. Just seven seconds later, junior face-off specialist Gannon Mesko scored off a face-off. Sophomore attack Ryan Kokoszka netted a man-up goal off a pass from Dzama while Dzama scored twice more including a man-up tally as the Blue & Grey led 5-0 after 15 minutes of action
  • Moravian also netted the only three goals of the second quarter as junior midfielder Aaron Judge, sophomore attack Vincent Devito and junior midfielder Dan Kelly all scored to push the edge to 8-0 at the intermission
  • Devito began the second half with a goal before the Colonels scored twice in the third period. Senior attack Brennan Fluehr finished the third quarter with a goal as the Hounds held a 10-2 advantage after 45 minutes of play
  • James opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a man-up goal, and the Blue & Grey added goals from junior midfielder Steven Salica and Kokoszka to finish of the match

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had ten players record a point in the contest with Dzama leading the way with three goals and six assists
  • Devito added two goals, an assist and a pair of ground balls while Kokoszka had two goals and five ground balls
  • Kelly and James each had a goal and an assist with James scooping up three ground balls and Kelly adding two ground balls while Mesko was 15-for-18 on face-offs with a team-high eight ground balls to go with his goal
  • Fluehr, Salica and Judge all netted one goal with Salica and Judge adding two ground balls a piece
  • Junior midfielder Aden Moskovitz contributed an assist with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Junior defender Jason Levy registered fur ground balls and four caused turnovers while senior long stick midfielder Matt Baer had four ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore defender Mike Sickler added three ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Junior midfielder Kyle Weiss scooped up five ground balls as did senior attack Joey Furino
  • Freshman goalie Liam Kelly made six saves to go with two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in 53 minutes of action while junior goalie Sam Boyer had one save in the final seven minutes of the contest
  • The Hounds held a 52-19 advantage in shots, a 60-28 edge in ground balls and went 17-for-20 on face-offs, and the Blue & Grey were 23-for-25 on clearing attempts and 4-for-9 with an extra man
