Greyhounds Allow Just One Hit in Sweep of Gwynedd Mercy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team allowed just one hit in a pair of 8-0, five-inning victories over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds scored all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning with four runs. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter led off with a walk, and after stealing second base, Walter raced home on an RBI double by junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys reached on an error before junior designated player Emily Silberman connected on an RBI single to score Zettlemoyer. Freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano ripped a two-RBI single to bring in Gawrys and freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner, who had come in to run for Silberman
  • The Blue & Grey plated three more runs in the second inning for a 7-0 advantage. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham started the frame with a single, and Walter added a single before Zettlemoyer connected on an RBI single to chase Cunningham home. Eventually, sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder ripped a two-RBI double that scored Gawrys, who had drawn a walk, and Zettlemoyer
  • Moravian added a run in the third inning when junior shortstop Ajala Elmore connected on a solo home run for an 8-0 lead and the NCAA eight-run rule. The homer was Elmore's first of the season and fifth of her career
  • Cunningham tossed her second no-hitter of the season and her career in the circle with four strikeouts and a pair of walks as she improved to 11-5 on the year 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning of the nightcap. The Hounds loaded the bases for sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder, who hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Tanner. Zettlemoyer drew an RBI walk that pushed Elmore across the plate while Gawrys connected on a two-RBI single to bring home Walter and DeStefano. Elmore and DeStefano had singles in the inning while Walter drew a walk
  • The Greyhounds tacked on four more runs in the third inning to hit the NCAA run rule again. Snyder led off with a single and after stealing second, she raced home on an RBI single off Silberman's bat. After Tanner pinch ran again, DeStefano connected on a single, and both Tanner and DeStefano scored on a two-RBI double from Walter. Gawrys drove in the final run of the day with an RBI single that chased Walter across the plate
  • DeStefano was perfect in the circle through the first four innings of the contest, and she ended up allowing just one hit while striking out three batters as she improved to 12-1 this spring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 19 hits in the doubleheader with Zettlemoyer going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and two runs scored and DeStefano having a 3-for-4 day with two runs and two RBIs
  • Walter contributed two hits, two RBIs, three runs and a double while Gawrys added two hits, two runs and three RBIs
  • Silberman recorded two hits and two RBIs while Elmore had two hits, two runs, an RBI and a homer. Snyder also collected two this, two RBIs, a run and a double while Tanner crossed the plate three times to go with a hit
  • Forder had a hit and an RBI while Cunningham posted a hit and a run
