No. 16 Greyhounds Split with Wilkes to Begin 2024 Landmark Conference Slate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 16 Moravian University softball squad split its 2024 Landmark Conference season opening doubleheader with visiting Wilkes University Sunday at Blue & Grey Field as the Greyhounds won the first game 6-3 before falling 1-0 in the second contest. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first game in the home opener at Blue & Grey Field this season. Junior shortstop Holly Walter drew a leadoff walk and stole second base before moving to third on a single from junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys. Junior center fielder Sage Snyder walked to load the bases before sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano ripped a two-out, two RBI single to right center as Walter and Gawrys raced home. Snyder came across the plate on a throwing error on a ball hit by senior pitcher Madi Cunningham
  • Wilkes answered with a run in the top of the second inning, and the Colonels scored twice in the top of the third to knot the score
  • Moravian retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gawrys led off with a triple into the right field corner, and she scampered home on a wild pitch. Snyder followed with a double, and she scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior designated player Emily Silberman. DeStefano hit a single, and she scored the final run of the game on an RBI single from junior left fielder Jessica Forder
  • Cunningham tossed a complete game in the circle with three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Colonels scored the only of the second contest in the top of the fourth inning
  • The Hounds threatened in the bottom of the fifth but left a pair of runners in scoring position
  • DeStefano tossed the first four innings with a run on four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts while sophomore Natalie Otto allowed a hit and struck out four batters in three innings of action 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits on the day with Gawrys going 4-for-7 with two runs, a double and a triple
  • DeStefano contributed two hits, a run and two RBIs while Snyder had two hits and two runs
  • Forder recorded two hits and an RBI while Silberman added two hits and RBI
  • Cunningham, sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman, sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews, freshman outfielder Shayla Morgan and freshman pinch hitter Kyra Holtje all had one hit
  • Walter scored once for the Hounds
