Greyhounds Fall in Overtime in Landmark Conference Battle with No. 21 Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad forced overtime with No. 21 The University of Scranton but suffered a 60-59 loss in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

  • Moravian got on the scoreboard first with a layup from sophomore forward Sam Osorio followed by a couple of baskets from the Royals to take a 4-2 lead. Junior guard Madison Amy hit a pair of free throws and sophomore forward Gracie Hezel made a layup and drew a foul to convert the three-point play for a 7-4 edge. Scranton scored the next eight points and extended their lead to 14-8 with two minutes to play in the first quarter. The Greyhounds would sink three free throws to end the first 10 minutes of action, trailing 16-11
  • The Royals extended their lead to eight points on two occasions before junior guard Emily Markowski drained a three-pointer to spark an 11-4 run for the Blue and Grey. Moravian took a 26-25 lead off a pair of layups from junior guard Ashley Robinson with 2:39 remaining in the quarter. The Greyhounds would end the half on a 9-4 run to take a six-point advantage into the locker room, 35-29
  • Senior forward Kayla Yoegel scored her first points of the game to start the third quarter to push the Hounds lead to eight points. Scranton continued to fight back and eventually regained the lead, 45-44 with 1:54 left on the game clock. Osorio hit a jump shot to put the Blue and Grey back on top, but a basket by the Royals put them ahead, 47-46, heading into the fourth quarter
  • Scranton extended their advantage to six points halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds countered with six straight points to tie the game at 52-52 with 3:07 remaining. Both squads sank three free throws apiece to end the quarter and send the game into overtime knotted up at 55-55
  • Scranton made the first basket followed by a jumper knocked down by Markowski to even the contest at 57-57 with 2:36 to play in the extra period. The Royals went up 60-57 before Osorio netted a jump shot to cut the deficit to just one point, 60-59 with 36 seconds remaining. With five seconds on the clock, Moravian was able to get two shots off but was unable to get them to fall to conclude the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • Hezel was the lone Greyhound to finish in double figures in scoring with 12 points to match her career-high and added six rebounds
  • Osorio, Markowski and junior guard Morgan Amy each recorded nine points apiece with Osorio bringing down a team-high eight rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist. Markowski ended the night with seven rebounds and a steal as Morgan Amy contributed a team-high four assists, three rebounds and two steals
  • Madison Amy notched seven points, seven boards, three assists and two steals while Robinson netted six points and grabbed a rebound.
  • Freshman guard Brielle Guarente added five points to go with five rebounds and an assist as Yoegel scored two points, three boards, three blocked shots and two steals
  • Freshman guard Mikayla Anderson recorded two rebounds for the Blue and Grey
  • Moravian and Scranton each made 20 shots from the floor with the Greyhounds shooting 20-for-65 (30.8 percent) whereas the Royals were 20-for-66 (30.3 percent).
  • The Blue and Grey went 17-for-21 from the free-throw line (81.0 percent) and committed 18 turnovers while forcing Scranton into 16 miscues
