Greyhounds Hang Tough with Nationally Ranked Catholic to Begin 2023 Landmark Conference Slate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse team hung tough with No. 24 The Catholic University of America, eventually falling, 16-10, on a rainy John Makuvek Field Saturday to begin the 2023 Landmark Conference season.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals scored the opening goal just 1:17 into action while the Greyhounds knotted the contest at 1-1 when sophomore attack Jackie Salvatore found the net. However, Catholic would tally four more goals to lead 5-1 after 15 minutes of action
  • Graduate student attack Eliza Fantazzi  netted the first goal of the second quarter before the Cardinals ran off five straight goals. Salvatore scored again just before the intermission to cut it to 10-3 Catholic at the break
  • The Cardinals tallied the first goal of the second half. The Hounds then scored three of the next four goals with sophomore midfielder Madi Dippel, senior midfielder Megan Donnelly and Fantazzi all netting goals. Catholic added one more marker to lead 13-6 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Cardinals also tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Moravian countered with the final four goals of the match as Donnelly, Dippel, graduate student attack Brittany Bill and senior attack Devin King each scored once 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven different players record points with Salvatore recording two goals and an assist to go with three ground balls. Donnelly, Dippel and Fantazzi each scored twice with Donnelly contributing seven draw controls and three caused turnovers and Dippel adding two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Bill and King each netted one goal with Bill recording five draw controls and two ground balls while sophomore midfielder Alex Cherenson added an assist and three ground balls
  • Junior defender Keara Reilly posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Hounds
  • Senior goalie Rylee Soltis made 10 saves and scooped up a pair of ground balls in the contest
