Greyhounds Hold Off Drew for First Landmark Conference Victory of the Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse team held off a second half rally from visiting Drew University to post an 18-16 victory in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon on John Makuvek Field.

How It Happened

  • The Rangers scored the opening goal of the match just 28 seconds into play while the Greyhounds countered 26 seconds later as sophomore attack Jackie Salvatore found the net. Sophomore midfielder Alex Cherenson, sophomore midfielder Madi Dippel and Salvatore all scored as the Hounds pushed the lead to 4-1 with 5:50 left in the opening quarter. Drew netted another goal as the Blue & Grey had a 4-2 edge after 15 minutes of action
  • The Rangers would get within a goal early in the second quarter before senior midfielder Megan Donnelly scored her first goal of the match as the teams combined for 11 goals in the second period. Drew cut the advantage to a goal again before graduate student attack Brittany Bill and Cherenson tallied goals. Once again, the Rangers pulled within a goal at 7-6. Moravian countered with four goals to end the half with two from graduate student attack Eliza Fantazzi and one each by Dippel and Donnelly as the Greyhounds held a 11-6 advantage at the intermission
  • Drew came out with three quick goals in the third quarter to get within 11-9 before Bill found the net twice. Salvatore and senior attack Devin King both scored before the end of the period, but the Rangers added three more to make it a 15-12 Moravian lead after 45 minutes of play
  • Drew opened the fourth quarter with a quick goal to get back within two. The Blue & Grey answered with three consecutive goals, two by Bill and one from Salvatore. The Rangers wouldn't go away, scoring three times in the final 4:09 and twice in the final 26 seconds to close the gap to two at the end of the match

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven different players record a point with Bill leading the squad with five goals and an assist to go with 11 draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Salvatore had four goals, and assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers while Fantazzi contributed two goals and an assist
  • Cherenson, Donnelly and Dippel each had a pair of goals with Cherenson adding five ground balls and three draw controls, Donnelly contributing five ground balls, four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers and Dippel recoding two draw controls
  • King netted one goal while junior defender Alise Downey had three ground balls and junior defender Keara Reilly caused a pair of turnovers
  • Senior goalie Rylee Soltis made 11 saves in the victory
  • The Hounds had a 51-36 advantage in shots, a 26-22 edge in ground balls, a 21-17 lead in draw controls and were 15-for-19 on clearing attempts in the match
