Moravian Knocks Off Scranton for First Time in Program History

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad scored seven times in the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie and earn a 16-10 Landmark Conference victory at The University of Scranton Thursday, the Greyhounds first-ever women's lacrosse win against the Royals.

How It Happened

  • Scranton netted the first goal of the contest before graduate student attack Brittany Bill scored twice for the Blue & Grey and a 2-1 advantage. The Royals countered with the next three goals to move back ahead 4-2. Senior midfielder Megan Donnelly netted a goal to cut the deficit to one while Scranton hit the net in the final minute of the first quarter to lead 5-3 after 15 minutes of action
  • Bill scored to open the second period to make it a one-goal contest before the Royals found the net again. Bill and sophomore midfielder Alex Cherenson tallied goals to knot the score at 6-6; however, Scranton had the last goal of the half to head to the intermission with a 7-6 edge
  • The Royals also netted the opening goal of the second half before Bill cut it to a one-goal match again with 5:03 to go in the third quarter. Scranton made it 9-7 with a goal before markers from Cherenson and sophomore midfielder Madi Dippel with Dippel scoring just 14 seconds before the end of the period knotted the score at 9-9 after 45 minutes of play
  • Moravian took the lead for good just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter when Bill found the net again, and the Greyhounds scored four more times for a 7-0 run that pushed the edge out to 14-9 when Cherenson tallied with 6:21 left in the contest. During the run, sophomore attack Jackie Salvatore and senior attack Kendall Lomascola each had a goal while Bill scored her final goal of the match. The Royals would cut the score to 14-10 with a goal before Donnelly hit the net at the 1:39 mark and Dippel scored with just two seconds left to seal the Hounds first-ever win over Scranton

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six different players record a point with Bill leading the team with seven goals to go with five draw controls
  • Cherenson netted a hat trick, and she had a pair of draw controls while Donnelly added two goals, two assists, eight draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls
  • Dippel contributed two goals, four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers while Salvatore recorded a goal and three assists and Lomascola had one goal
  • Senior goalie Rylee Soltis posted 11 saves in the victory to go with three ground balls while junior defender Keara Reilly had a pair of ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • The Blue & Grey posted a 31-27 advantage in shots, an 18-12 edge in draw controls and went 20-for-24 on clearing attempts
  • Prior to the Hounds win on Thursday, the squads had met 18 times including 14 regular season matchups and four Landmark Conference Semifinal contests with Scranton winning all 18 of those matches
