Women’s Soccer Falls to Wilkes in Opening Match

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College women's soccer team fell to non-conference opponent Wilkes University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon on the HUB Quad. Freshman midfielder Catherine Lamplugh netted the lone goal for the Greyhounds.

In the 26th minute, Lamplugh of Moravian put the first goal on the board, and junior midfielder Samantha Dunn assisted on the play. The Colonels answered back just three minutes later with a goal from junior forward Kate Cocchi off a cross from senior forward Jana Martin.

Moravian and Wilkes were dead even in shots with six a piece in the first half as the match was dead locked at one going into the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Kirsten Schall had an opportunity early in the second half to break the tie, but she would send the shot just high. Wilkes would eventually break the tie in the 80th minute when senior forward Katy Fissel hit a perfect shot that just beat Greyhound junior goalie Genevieve Chaleff to push the Colonels ahead 2-1.

Chaleff recorded one save during her 45 minutes of play in the second half while senior goalie Tori Korona started the contest, and made two saves.

The Greyhounds are back in action tomorrow as they host Penn State-Altoona in a non-conference match. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the HUB Quad.
