Scranton Edges Moravian, 2-0, in Landmark Championship Game

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Moravian College women's soccer team fell to The University of Scranton, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in the Landmark Conference Championship game.

The Greyhounds and Royals battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half with Scranton holding the edge in shots at 13-3, and the corner kick advantage at 2-0. Senior goalkeeper Tori Korona came up big in the early going after making four tough saves in the first 12 minutes of the match. Freshman midfielder Brittany Nicoline had a shot to take the lead in the 23rd minute, but junior goalie Kelsy McAnelly for Scranton made the save.

In the second half, Moravian put the pressure on in the 58th minute after shots from freshman forward Melissa Pavia and Nicoline, but neither met the back of the net. The Royals broke the tie when sophomore midfielder Ellen Walker sent her corner kick to senior defender Emily Farrell, who headed it in the back of the net to put Scranton up 1-0 in the 85th minute. Junior forward Samantha Russo assured the victory for the Royals with an 89th minute goal as Scranton went onto win 2-0.

Korona tallied ten saves in the match while her counterpart, McAnelly made two saves in the victory.

Scranton held the shot advantage at 22-8, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
