Vanek an All-American with 7th Place in Pole Vault at NCAA Meet

NAPERVILLE, Ill. --- Junior Allison Vanek of the Moravian College indoor track & field team has earned All-America honors for the first time in her career with a seventh place finish in the pole vault in the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships Friday at North Central College's Al B. Carius Track.

Vanek cleared her first three heights of 3.45, 3.60 and 3.75 meters on her first attempt at each height. She then made three attempts at 3.85 meters (12 feet, 7 ½ inches) that would have been a career best, but was unable to clear the bar cleanly. Vanek was tied with two other vaulters at 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3 ½ inches); however, she needed fewer attempts to make the clearances and finished in seventh place by herself in her first trip to the NCAA meet. Vanek had entered the competition at sixth in the nation after clearing a career high 3.81 meters (12 feet, six inches) last weekend.

Vanek earned the Greyhounds two points with her seventh place finish, and Moravian was tied for 15th place of 29 teams after the first day's events were complete. For complete results, visit http://results.deltatiming.com/track/2013-ncaa-d3-indoor-championships.

Moravian has now had an All-American in the women's pole vault in six straight championships with Anna Heim '10 finishing fourth in 2008, second in 2009 and the national champion in 2010 at a then meet record height of 4.16 meters (16 feet, 7 ¾ inches), and Abigail Schaffer '12 winning the national title in 2011 at the current meet record of 4.17 meters (16 feet, 8 ¼ feet) and finishing second last winter.

The Greyhounds will have senior Micah Leonard compete in the triple jump on Saturday in the second and final day of the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.
