BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's track & field team won its tenth Landmark Conference Outdoor Championship by claiming the 2017 title after the second day of competition hosted by the Greyhounds at Timothy Breidegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field on Sunday.
The Hounds recorded a 21-point victory with Moravian scoring 245 points while Elizabethtown College had 224 points. The Greyhounds had five individual champions and one relay finish first to earn 10 points apiece.
"This truly was a team effort as we scored points across the board, Baumann said. "Our throwers displayed great depth with Trista, Mary Kate and Jackie scoring big points. Times weren't really fast in the sprints due to the weather, but Becky, Anna, Lilly, and Mel all had strong weekend for us. Our jumps squad had their best meet of the year as Mel, Kiara, Carly, and Lauren all set huge seasons best marks. Our young distance core, especially Carly, Ashely, and Larissa helped add the points we needed to win. We were motivated after a close battle indoors and are certainly happy to start our championship season on a good note."
Junior Melissa Cheong won the 100-meter hurdles for the second straight year in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.55 seconds as Moravian went 1-2-3-4 in the event with sophomore Amari Schooler in second in 15.89 seconds, senior Rebecca Flitcroft in third in 16.05 seconds and sophomore Anna Osman in fourth in 16.66 seconds. Osman would repeat as the champion in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.28 while Flitcroft took second in 1:10.04 and junior Holly Wagner placed fifth in 1:12.56.
Schooler joined with senior Lauren White, sophomore Abigail Strouse and freshman Lily Cooper to win the 4x100-meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 49.05 seconds. It marks the tenth straight year the Greyhounds have won the event.
Cheong also won the high jump at an ECAC qualifying height of 1.57 meters (5-1.75) while junior Casie Cronk finished third at 1.47 meters (4-9.75). Senior Kiara Bright captured the triple jump with a distance of 10.66 meters (34-11.75) with senior Lauren Suelke in second at 10.30 meters (33-9.5) and junior Carly Thorpe in third at a distance of 10.22 meters (33-6.5).
Back on the track, Cooper was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash in 26.40 seconds while White took fourth in 24.65 seconds. Cooper also finished third in the 100-meter dash in 12.79 seconds while White was fifth in 13.14 seconds and freshman Meghan Lazarchak placed seventh in 13.65 seconds. Osman took fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.98 while freshman Carly Danoski was the runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.49. Freshman Ashley Rohrer was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:27.85 while the Greyhounds' 4x400-meter relay squad of Danoski, Flitcroft, sophomore Monica Richardson and freshman Danielle Tomko finished fifth in a time of 4:17.17.
In the throws on day two of the meet, junior Mary Kate Duncan was the runner-up in the javelin at an ECAC qualifying distance of 44.35 meters (145-6) while junior Nicole Capuano took sixth at an ECAC qualifying distance of 37.52 meters (123-1). Junior Maggie Heft placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 10.86 meters (35-7.75) while junior Ciara Stewart was seventh at 10.59 meters (34-9) and junior Trista Cunningham took eighth at 10.58 meters (34-8.5).
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Monday, May 15 at the Swarthmore College Last Chance Meet beginning at 4:00 p.m.
