Hounds Earn Two Wins in Opening Day of 18th Greyhound Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball squad captured a pair of victories on the opening day of the 18th Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall Friday, defeating Alvernia University, 3-2, and Baruch (N.Y.) College, 3-0.

How It Happened – Alvernia Match

  • The Greyhounds jumped out quick with a two-point lead and led 5-2 in the opening set. Moravian extended the lead to nine points at 20-11. The Hounds eventually pulled a way to earn a 25-17 victory in the first set.
  • Moravian got on the board first but fell behind for the first time in the match, 2-1, before rattling off four straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Alvernia would pull within a point at 12-11, but the Greyhounds would extend the lead to 17-11, before taking the second set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead.
  • A close-contested third set saw the Golden Wolves and Greyhounds go point-for-point, with Alvernia ultimately taking a two-point lead at 22-20. Moravian tied it at 22-22 before the Golden Wolves scored the final three points to claim the third set, 25-22.
  • Alvernia fired off five-consecutive points in the fourth set, but Moravian cut it to two points at 8-6, but that's as close as the Greyhounds would come this set, as the Golden Wolves won set four 25-19 to force set five.
  • After exchanging points up to 6-6, Moravian began to pull away and claimed the match by winning the fifth set 15-10 for their first victory of the season.

How It Happened – Baruch Match

  • Moravian and Baruch each earned a point before the Greyhounds tallied seven-consecutive points to take an 8-1 lead. The Bearcats fought back on multiple occasions, even tying to contest at 19-19, but the Blue & Grey would take the first set 25-21.
  • In the second set, both squads put together a series of mini runs, with Baruch taking a four-point lead two times in the set, with the last being a Bearcat lead of 11-7. Moravian fought back and tied the game up at 12-12 and even 20-20 before the Greyhounds pulled away with a 25=20 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Starting off strong in the third set, the Blue & Grey led by seven points at 15-8 before Baruch made a charge and tied the set at 18-18 and even took a 24-22 lead before Moravian mustered four-straight points to claim their second win of the evening, defeating Baruch 3-0.

 Inside the Numbers

  • Senior outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach led Moravian with 26 kills, 31 digs and added six services aces.
  • Senior outside hitter Sela Herber finished with 17 kills, 18 digs and seven service aces.
  • Freshman middle blocker Jenna Deegan contributed 16 kills and six block assists
  • Freshman setter Emily Solomon ended the evening with 62 assists, 13 digs, and two service aces.
