Volleyball Suffers Setbacks on Final Day of Spike It Up Classic

 COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball squad concluded their trip to Colorado with two losses in the 2021 Molten Spike It Up Classic, held at Colorado College. suffering a 3-0 loss to Occidental (Calif.) College, then fell in straight sets to the host and No. 4 ranked Colorado College, 3-0.

How It Happened – Occidental (Calif.) College Match

  • The Greyhounds would record 11 kills in the first set with Occidental downing just nine attacks, but the Tigers would claim the first set, 25-17.
  • Moravian earned nine kills to the Tigers 13, with both squads attempting 39 attacks, Occidental walked away with set two by a score of 25-19.
  • A close-contested third set saw the Greyhounds and Tigers exchanging points and tied down the stretch, but Occidental scored the final two points of the set and defeated Moravian, 26-24.

How It Happened – No. 4 Colorado College Match

  • Colorado started off with two straight points before the Greyhounds notched their first point, but the Tigers would show their dominance by holding Moravian to single digits, taking the first set 25-7.
  • In the second set, the Blue and Grey scored first and then tied the set at 2-2, but Colorado put a string of points together and began to pull away. Moravian dropped the second set by a score of 25-12.
  • Moravian got in the scorer's column after three-straight points from the Tigers to start the third set. Colorado would put a four-point run together before the Greyhounds fired back with three of their own. The Tigers would prove to be too much, claiming the set, 25-13, and match 3-0. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Senior outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach, who was named to the Spike It Up Classic Tournament Team, led Moravian with 17 kills and 15 digs, while contributing four block assists and an assist.
  • Senior outside hitter Sela Herber finished with 9 kills, 15 digs, two service ace sand an assist.
  • Senior Renee Mapa contributed 8 kills, four block assists and three digs.
  • Freshman middle blocker Jenna Deegan contributed 9 kills, four block assists, and three digs as junior Gabby Mancini totaled 16 digs.
  • Junior setter Natalia Matos led the Greyhounds with 39 assists and contributed 10 digs and a block assist.
