Hounds Drop Five-Set Match to Drew in Landmark Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball squad dropped a back-and-forth, five-set match to visiting Drew University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening in Johnston Hall.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored the opening two points of the match before the Rangers ran off five straight points. Moravian fought back and tied the set at 11-11 before eventually moving ahead for good at 16-15 on a kill from senior outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach. The Blue and Grey took the set, 25-21, to open a 1-0 lead
  • Drew scored the first two points of the second set but this time it was Moravian that came back to take a 5-3 lead. The Hounds had an 8-7 edge before the Rangers jumped in front. The Greyhounds came back to tie the set twice, the final time at 17-17 at which point Drew scored eight of the final nine points to win the set 25-18 and tie the contest at 1-1
  • The Rangers once again had a 3-1 lead in the third set before the Blue and Grey moved ahead 5-3 with sophomore defensive specialist Emily Szy serving. After Drew moved back in front, Dreisbach served Moravian out to an 11-9 edge. The Hounds had a 20-19 advantage before the Rangers once again scored six of the final seven points to earn a 25-21 set win and to take a 2-1 lead
  • Drew took a 3-1 lead early in the fourth set, however; Szy served the Greyhounds back in front at 6-4. After the Rangers scored four straight, junior setter Natalia Matos had Moravian leading 9-8. The Hounds took the lead for good at 11-10 and would stretch the edge to five points only to see Drew pull within a point at 24-23 before a kill from Dreisbach gave the Blue and Grey the set 25-23 and tied the contest at 2-2
  • Moravian had an early 2-0 edge in the fifth and deciding set, and the Hounds pushed that advantage to 6-3 before the Rangers scored four straight points. The Greyhounds moved back in front, 9-8, only to see Drew pull ahead 13-10. Moravian got within a point again at 13-12 before the Rangers scored the final two points to win the set 15-12 and the match 

Inside the Numbers

  • Dreisbach led Moravian with 18 kills to go with 19 digs, and Dreisbach had 75 attack attempts in the match, tying the school record for a five-set match set by Mary Zacher at Farmingdale State College in 2017
  • Freshman middle blocker Jenna Deegan contributed 14 kills, three blocks and three digs while senior middle blocker Renee Mapa had 11 kills and a pair of blocks
  • Senior outside hitter Sela Herber added seven kills and 14 digs for the Greyhounds while Matos had 44 assists, 29 digs, four kills and a pair of service aces
  • Junior libero Gabby Mancini also had 29 digs to go with five assists while sophomore defensive specialist Kat DeYesso added 26 digs
  • Szy finished with eight digs and two assists while freshman middle blocker Kerry Dillon had nine digs, two blocks and a kill
