#18 Moravian Tops Berry (Ga.), 5-3 at NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The 18th-ranked Moravian College softball team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and post a 5-3 win over Berry (Ga.) College at the National Training Center Tuesday morning.

After three and a half scoreless innings, Moravian, now 2-2 on the season, started the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst and sophomore designated player Rachel DeLucia each had one-out singles before sophomore Alycia Sabol came in to pinch run for DeLucia.  Sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik followed with a two-RBI single, and Mihalik scored the final run of the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior pinch hitter Brook Kowal.

The Vikings, 7-4 on the year, answered with three runs of their own in the tip of the fifth inning.  Freshman outfielder Critter Dawsey led off with a single and scored on an RBI double by junior shortstop Jessica Washington.  Junior first baseman Kristen Stoll had an RBI single to score Washington while freshman designated player Courtney Hodges connected on an RBI single to score junior second baseman Lacey Herring, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Greyhounds would plate a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth for the victory.  Freshman outfielder Dior George led off with a single and stole second base, and George moved to third as the throw got away.  Freshman first baseman Lizzie Mack followed with an RBI single, and Mack scored the final run of the game when Ernst reached on an error.

Moravian had an 8-7 edge in hits with Mihalik going two-for-three with a pair of RBIs and George posting a two-for-four performances.  Stoll was two-for-four at the plate to lead Berry.

Sophomore Elizabeth Tillou started in the circle for Moravian and tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk to go with one strikeout.  Senior Jenna Carmon pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for her first win of the season, allowing just one hit.

Junior Caillee Shamoun took the loss for Berry, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts.

Moravian returned to the field immediately to take on Misericordia University at 11:00 a.m.
