Moravian Runs Past CCNY on Opening Day of 19th Steel Club Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team hit the century mark for the first time since 2010 as the Greyhounds defeated visiting City College of New York, 102-14, on the opening day of the 19th Steel Club Classic in Johnston Hall Friday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds needed just five seconds to take the lead as graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi scored off the opening tip-off on a pass from senior guard Morgan Amy. The Blue and Grey pushed the edge into double digits with 4:30 to go in the opening quarter on a lay-up by junior forward Sam Osorio for a 13-2 edge. Moravian would hold a 27-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action after a late jumper from freshman guard Jayda Cartagena
  • The Greyhounds limited the Beavers to just two points in the second quarter while pushing the lead out to 48-7 at the intermission
  • Moravian's advantage would be 77-12 after 30 minutes of action as freshman guard Sarah Miniter beat the buzzer with a three-pointer
  • The Hounds hit the century mark for the first time since a 108-70 win over Drew University on January 29, 2010 with 3:05 to play when sophomore forward Brielle Guarente hit a jumper for a 100-12 lead

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five players in double figures with graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel and Guarente each netting 14 points, which was a career high for Guarente. Yoegel also had seven rebounds and a pair of assists while Guarente contributed six assists and five boards
  • Cartagena finished with a career-best 13 points to go with three assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals while Zamolyi contributed 12 points and nine boards and Osorio had her eighth career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five steals and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Miniter tossed in a career-high nine points with three assists and three rebounds while Amy and senior forward Emily Markowski both scored eight points with Amy dishing out nine assists and Markowski adding four steals, three rebounds and two assists
  • Sophomore guard Mikayla Anderson netted a career-high six points to go with a career best seven rebounds and three assists while senior guard Ashley Robinson added five points, five rebounds and two assists and freshman guard Nicole Rendina had the first two points of her career to go with five rebounds
  • The Hounds shot 40-for-76 from the floor, 5-for-8 beyond the three-point line and 17-for-25 at the foul line in the contest
  • The Blue & Grey held a 61-26 advantage on the boards, and the Greyhounds forced the Beavers into 35 turnovers while committing just 15 miscues
