Moravian Rallies in Second Half But Comes Up Short Versus No. 20 Christopher Newport on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM Pa. --- The Moravian College women's lacrosse squad rallied from a three-goal deficit to take a second half lead before falling to No. 20 Christopher Newport University, 17-13, Saturday on John Makuvek Field in the Greyhounds' only non-conference match of the abbreviated 2021 season.

How It Happened

  • The Captains scored the first two goals of the match before two goals from junior midfielder Lindsey Strohl knotted the score at 2-2 with 16:42 left in the first half. Christopher Newport retook a goal lead before senior midfielder Meaghan McMullan tied the game again at 3-3 midway through the first half. The Captains answered with three straight goals, and CNU scored twice in the final 1:42 of the half to head to the intermission with a 9-6 advantage
  • Moravian opened the scoring in the second half when sophomore attack Megan Donnelly netted a goal at the 25:22 mark, starting a run of four goals by the Hounds in just over three minutes to take the lead. McMullan scored to make it a one-goal game while sophomore attack Devin King tied the game and senior Breanna Federico gave the Blue and Grey their only lead of the match at 10-9 with 22:05 remining. Christopher Newport responded with five straight goals to move back in front 14-10. McMullan answered with three straight goals to make it a one-goal match at 14-13 with 5:24 to play. However, the Captains scored the final three goals of the contest 

Inside the Numbers

  • McMullan led with six goals to go with six draw controls while Strohl had three goals and six draw controls. Donnelly finished with two goals and four ground balls while King and Federico each had one goal
  • Senior attack Danielle Sullivan added a pair of assists with three ground balls while senior defender Olivia Clearie had an assist, five draw controls and two caused turnovers. Junior defender Meghan Moore also had three ground balls.
  • Senior Courtney Heist made the start in goal for Moravian and had four saves in the first half of play while sophomore Brelyn Friedman had four saves in the second half
  • Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their six seniors – defender Maecy Chlebowski, Clearie, Federico, Heist, McMullan and Sullivan. The group has helped Moravian to a 31-17 mark in their career and three Landmark Conference Tournament appearances
