Men's & Women's Tennis Earn Academic Awards from ITA

SKILLMAN, N.J. --- The 2010-11 Moravian College women's tennis team has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for the tenth consecutive year.

Five of the Greyhound women's individual players, senior Elizabeth Endy (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin HS), sophomore Chelsea Ott (Whitehall, Pa./William Allen HS) and freshmen Olivia Sonnabend (King of Prussia, Pa./Delaware County Christian HS), Erica Venuti (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township HS) and Katie Zien (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield HS) earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA, earning a varsity letter and being enrolled for at least two semesters. Over 1,500 student-athletes were honored.

From the Moravian men's squad, juniors David Chan (Macau, China/The Phelps School {Pa.}) and Nick Yelito (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua HS) and sophomore Brad Kutcha (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park HS) earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA eligibility form and have competed in one or more matches are averaged into the cumulative grade point average for the current year (including fall 2010 and spring 2011).

A total of 349 men's and women's teams from NCAA schools earned the ITA All-Academic Award, while 24 men's and women's programs from NAIA schools and 11 junior college programs were honored with the largest number, 109 programs, coming from the NCAA Division I women's programs.

Moravian was one of 72 NCAA Division III women's teams to win the ITA All-Academic Team award and the only Landmark Conference women's team honored.

Endy and Ott helped lead the Greyhound women to a 10-7 record, the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Ott was the 2011 Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year and on the Landmark All-Conference First Teams in singles and doubles after records of 13-1 in singles action and 12-3 in doubles. Endy was 7-6 in both singles and doubles in her final season.

Zien earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference First Team in doubles after a 6-2 mark with Ott, and Zien was 10-10 in singles action in her debut campaign. Zien and Venuti were 6-7 in doubles action while Venuti had a 3-5 singles record. Sonnabend was 2-2 in singles action in her first year with the Greyhounds..

Yelito earned a spot on the 2011 Landmark All-Conference First Team in doubles action while posting a 10-4 record, and he was 9-7 in singles action. Chan was 1-0 in singles this past season while Kutcha had a 1-0 doubles mark as both players made their collegiate debuts with the Greyhounds this year.

Moravian's women begin the 2011-12 season on Saturday, September 3rd as the Greyhounds host a four-team tournament at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus. The men are scheduled to begin the season on Saturday, September 10th in a dual match at King's College.
