BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to Keystone College in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Wednesday.

How It Happened

  • The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Greyhounds countered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Senior outfielder Carmine Palummo tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch, and senior first baseman Brett Moyer crossed the plate on a balk as the Hounds took the lead
  • Moravian added a run on the bottom of the second inning when freshman outfielder Matt Madigan raced home on an error for a 3-1 edge
  • Keystone moved back in front with a three-run top of the fourth as the Giants had a 4-3 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds moved right back in front when freshman designated hitter Cole Cherkas connected on a three-run homer, his first collegiate home run, as the Blue and Grey led 6-4 after four innings
  • Keystone plated a run on the top of the fifth to make it a 6-5 game, and the Giants would score two runs in the top of the seventh, two more in the eighth and the final two runs in the top of the ninth to finish the scoring in the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had just five hits in the game with Palummo going 2-for-5 with two runs, and he also had a pair of stolen bases to move into a tie for eighth in school history with 39 career stolen bases
  • Cherkas, Madigan and senior outfielder Thomas Philipps each had one hit
  • Moyer scored twice and drew three walks on the day
  • The Hounds sent nine pitchers to the mound in a set rotation to get live game action during the midweek. Junior Eddie Olsen recorded two strikeouts in his inning of work while freshman Cameron Cooper, senior Rodney Berger and freshman David Ciaccio each had one strikeout
