2013-14 Top 10 Stories - Best of the Rest

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College continues its look back at the 2013-14 athletic campaign with Top 10 Stories from the past year, and before unveiling the No. 1 story, we'll take a look at some of the other top stories from the 2013-14 campaign that missed out on the Top 10. The top story will be released on Thursday, August 14 as the football team opens the 2014-15 year with its first practice of the preseason.

 

Women's Basketball Wins NCAA Division III for 6th Straight Year

The women's basketball team was named as the NCAA Division III winner of the 2014 Kay Yow Cancer Fund Play 4Kay Contest with over $12,500 raised in 2014, the sixth straight year that the Greyhounds' program has led NCAA Division III schools in Play 4Kay. The contest is an effort to reward participating teams in the Play 4Kay who are also raising funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund®, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Moravian raised $12,573 this year, the top amount from an NCAA Division III school. Moravian has raised a total of $57,933 over the last six years.

Kristopher Joint & Ryan Karnopp Capture ECAC Indoor & Outdoor Titles

Senior jumper Kristopher Joint and sophomore pole vaulter Ryan Karnopp each had outstanding years and earned All-America honors in 2014 but what may get lost in all the awards was the fact that Joint won the triple jump at both the ECAC Indoor Championships at the New York City Armory in March and the ECAC Outdoor Championship at RPI in May, and Karnopp captured the pole vault title at both meets.

Four Greyhounds Earn Landmark Senior Scholar-Athlete Honors

The Landmark Conference presents an award to recognize one student-athlete from each sport who has excelled both athletically and academically. Seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher are eligible for the award. Moravian had four student-athletes – women's basketball player Katie O'Rourke, softball standout Eavan Matz, men's outdoor track & field athlete Craig Arner and women's tennis player Katie Zien – receive the honor in 2013-14 to give the Greyhounds 14 Landmark Senior Scholar-Athletes since the conference began in 2007.

Dillon Farrell Repeats as Landmark Conference Cross Country Runner of the Year

Junior Dillon Farrell capped off another outstanding cross country season by winning his second straight Landmark Conference Individual title on November 2, 2013 with a 19-second victory in the men's 8,000-meter race. Farrell was the conference's Runner of the Week five times last fall, and he went on finish 11th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive fall.

Sara Steinman Named NACWAA Administrator of Tomorrow

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) announced women's basketball assistant coach and director of intramurals Sara Steinman as one of its 2014 Administrators of Tomorrow. The award is presented to an undergraduate/graduate student, intern or volunteer who aspires to a career in intercollegiate athletics, and recognizes involvement and a leadership role on campus, in a conference office or an organization and in the community.

Matt Hanson Earns Two Player of the Year Awards

Junior right fielder Matt Hanson earned a pair of Player of the Year awards this past spring, earning the Landmark Conference and D3baseball.com Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors. Hanson won numerous postseason awards after helping the Greyhounds to a 32-12 season, the first national ranking in school history and the top seed in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional. He hit .408 for the season with 62 hits, tied for the second most in a single season in school history.

Kristopher Joint, Dillon Farrell & Kahron Walker Sweep Landmark Indoor Track & Field Honors

The men's indoor track & field team capturing its sixth straight Landmark Conference title was No. 5 in the Top 10 countdown but that story focused on the team accomplishment. Senior Kristopher Joint was named the Landmark Field Athlete of the Year for a second straight year while junior Dillon Farrell was the Landmark Track Athlete of the Year and freshman Kahron Walker earned Landmark Rookie of the Year honors. Joint won the long jump and triple jump while Farrell took first place in the 3K and 5K races. Walker was the high jump champion.

Jenn Dalickas Named Landmark Conference Player of the Year

Junior first baseman Jenn Dalickas was part of the No. 9 story in the countdown for being one of seven Greyhounds to earn All-America honors in 2013-14 but she was also tabbed as the Landmark Conference Softball Player of the Year after she helped Moravian to a 29-8 overall record and a berth in the Landmark Tournament. On the field, Dalickas led the Greyhounds with a .505 average to go with 54 hits, 38 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, a school record 12 home runs, a school record 53 RBIs, a school record 106 total bases, a .991 slugging percentage, 19 walks and a .579 on-base percentage.
