Zien Honored as Landmark Women's Tennis Senior Scholar-Athlete

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior Katie Zien has been selected as the 2014 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for Women's Tennis.

The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors. Chosen at the conclusion of each sport season, the 10 spring honorees are being announced last week and this week.

"I am thrilled Katie is receiving this well-deserved academic honor," stated retiring Head Coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner. "The team and myself are very, very proud of all she has accomplished during her four years at Moravian."

Zien helped the Greyhounds to a 14-4 record this season, including a 5-1 slate in the Landmark regular season to earn the second seed in the Landmark Tournament. Moravian returned to the postseason this year before dropping a tough 5-4 match in the semifinals, the team's only setback at Hoffman Courts in 2013-2014.

On the court, Zien had a 16-4 singles mark that included an 11-3 record at third singles and a 4-0 slate at second singles. The marks were good enough to earn Zien a spot on the Landmark All-Conference First Team in singles. Zien and freshman Brittany Eady were 17-3 in doubles action, including a 16-2 mark at second doubles. The tandem was named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team last month.

Zien completed her career with a 44-21 record in singles action, and she was a two-time All-Conference honoree in singles, making the Second Team in 2013 in addition to the First Team selection this year. Zien was 47-18 in her career in doubles action with her win total tied for second in school history. She was a three-time All-Conference doubles player, making the First Team in 2011 and 2012, and she was the team MVP in 2012.

Off the court, Zien has maintained a 3.76 GPA in economics/finance while earning dual minors in management and Spanish. Zien, who made Moravian's Dean's List in seven of her eight semesters, studied abroad in fall 2012, missing a portion of the season on the court.

During her career, Zien was named to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll three times, and she was on the 2013 Landmark Spring All-Academic Team. Zien was also selected to the 2014 Landmark Spring All-Sportsmanship Team and is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete. She has also been active on campus as a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, serving as the philanthropy chair and the goldstar and bylaws chair.
