Women’s Singles Sink St. Benedict at Spring Break, 5-4

TAMPA, Fla. – The College of St. Benedict swept doubles play to open their match against the Moravian College women's tennis team, but the Greyhounds showed no signs of quitting and won five of the six singles matchups to clinch a 5-4 victory Wednesday on their Spring Break trip in Central Florida.

The marathon dual match, which clocked in at just over four hours, was on the shoulders of senior Melissa Follett at first singles. With eight games in the books and the score knotted at 4-4, Follett defeated her St. Benedict opponent in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, to secure the match.

The Greyhounds improved to 8-2 on the season in large part to dominating singles play after St. Benedict took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. St. Benedict fell to 7-4 this season with the loss.

Freshman Brittney Eady scored the victory at No. 2 singles by cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win. Senior Katie Zien also turned in a smooth performance at third singles, topping her St. Benedict foe 6-2, 6-0. Eady and Zien both improved to 8-2 individually in singles play during the 2013-14 season.

Freshman Selina Ocasio notched a victory at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-3, to improve to 6-2 on the year in solo action.

Courtnie Lambert continued her impressive sophomore season with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win at No. 6 singles. Lambert has dropped just one singles match this season and improves to 8-1 overall.

The Greyhounds have a quick turnaround for their final Spring Break match in Tampa. Moravian will rise with the sun to face John Carroll University at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 6 at Hillsborough Community College.

The Moravian women return to Bethlehem on Saturday, March 15 to kick off Landmark Conference play with Goucher College on the Hoffman Courts at 1 p.m.
