Women's Tennis Serves Up Season-Opening Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College women's tennis team kicked off the 2013 season in dominating fashion, downing Rutgers University-Camden 8-1 on Saturday morning on the Hoffman Courts.

The Greyhounds (1-0) were undefeated in doubles play as signs of good teamwork and communication were prevalent early. The No. 1 team of seniors Melissa Follett and Erica Venuti scored an 8-5 win for the Blue and Grey.

The veteran-rookie duos finished a dominating doubles day. Senior Katie Zien and freshman Brittney Eady took an 8-1 decision from their Rutgers-Camden opponents, while senior Olivia Sonnabend and freshman Julia Atiyeh teamed up for an 8-6 win.

At first singles, Follett fell to Amanda Hickman 8-3 for Moravian's only blemish of the season-opener. Zien took a hard-fought 8-5 decision at second singles.

The youngster Eady got her Moravian career started with an 8-3 win at third singles. Fourth singles saw Venuti breeze by her Rutgers-Camden foe 8-2. Sophomores Brittany Hodge and Courtnie Lambert completed Moravian's singles slate with respective 8-3 and 8-4 triumphs.

The Greyhounds hosted the Moravian Team Tournament on Saturday, which featured two dual matches for Head Coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner's squad. The second match was set against Misericordia in the afternoon session.
