Women's Tennis Blanks Improved King's College, 9-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College women's tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2013 season with a sweeping 9-0 victory over King's College on Saturday afternoon on the Hoffman Courts.

The Greyhounds (3-0) faced a vastly improved Kings side, which forced Moravian to win two separate tiebreaker sets at first and second singles to preserve the sweep. Senior Melissa Follett won at first singles 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) and senior Katie Zien was victorious at second singles 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).

"The final score was not indicative of the level of play," said head coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner, who was at the helm for her 277th victory at Moravian. "Kings was much improved from last year. They stayed in every point and they stayed in the match. It was a great match to watch.

"Our team did a great job considering the change of weather. We practiced this week in 90-degree weather, then today it wasn't more than 60 degrees and we had high wings. I was pleased with how they kept it together in the weather. They handled adversity very well, stayed focused, and played very consistent tennis. I'm very proud of them."

Freshman Brittney Eady took her third singles match in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, while fourth singles saw senior Erica Venuti win her match 6-1, 6-2.

"We started strong and ended strong – that was our goal today," said Venuti, who sports a perfect 3-0 record in singles play this season.

"We wanted to win doubles, then stay consistent and win singles," Zien added. "It was a great day all around for our team."

Freshmen Brittany Hodge (6-1, 6-2) and Selina Ocasio (6-0, 6-0) closed out a perfect singles slate on Saturday.

"The freshmen are very impressive with what they're doing on the courts so far," Ketterman-Benner said. "They're all working hard and this is going to be a very strong team looking forward to the future. This is the foundation of the future of this program."

The Moravian doubles pairings only lost three games against Kings on the Hoffman Courts. Follett and Venuti won 8-2 at first doubles, while Eady and Zien teamed up for an 8-1 win at second doubles. Hodge and Ocasio closed it out with an 8-0 victory at third doubles.

Ketterman-Benner saw two victories on the courts on Saturday. One was the 9-0 result, and the other was building confidence and momentum heading into a tough match at Albright College on Wednesday. First serve of that match is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Reading as the Greyhounds look to extend their perfect start to 4-0.
