Greyhounds Give Elementary School a Taste of College Athletics

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – College may still be a decade away for the first and second grade classes at William Penn Elementary School, but it's never too early to show them what it means to be a Hound.

Coaches and players from the Moravian College volleyball, field hockey, women's basketball, women's tennis and women's soccer teams hosted an eager and energetic group of children in the ARC on Thursday morning for the College Connect program, sponsored by the Center for Leadership and Service.

The focus of the program is to bring youth to Moravian to get a chance to experience college life. One of the positive elements to highlight about college life is sports, as it promotes healthy living, sportsmanship, teamwork and determination.

Head women's soccer coach Brienne Smith coordinated the event with Moravian's College Connect program, and head women's basketball coach Mary Beth Spirk organized stations and activities for the children.

The first and second graders were split into groups and rotated around the ARC to participate in different games and physical activities, supervised by Greyhound student-athletes and coaching staff. The health, safety, movement and fitness for the early childhood teacher class, taught by head women's tennis coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner, also participated in the event.

The William Penn athletes participated in a ladder drill, where senior volleyball player Brittany O'Hara, a student in Ketterman-Benner's class, incorporated a lesson on animals. The students imitated the sounds and movements of a snake, a frog and a kangaroo as they hopped and slithered through the ladder drill.

The kids also took part in a one-footed balance basketball pass, a crazy bouncy ball chase, a free throw line and soccer penalty kicks.
