TOWSON, Md. – For the first time in Landmark Conference history, 45 student-athletes have been named to the All-Sportsmanship Team, which includes one student-athlete from each institution for each sport selected by the players and coaches from their respective team.
The All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship. The student-athletes selected demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat. They are ambassadors for the team, both on and off the field, and galvanize their teammates toward their goals. These student-athletes exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, spectators and the greater campus community.
The All-Sportsmanship Team was created by the Landmark Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2013 as a way to highlight student-athletes who are making an impact. The Landmark Conference previously awarded a Sportsmanship Cup before the All-Sportsmanship Team replaced the Cup for the 2013-14 academic year.
Men's Soccer
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Boland is the men's soccer team's selection to the All-Sportsmanship Team after playing 1,577 minutes in net this season without a single yellow card. Boland boasted a 1.77 goals-against average this season while making a Landmark-leading 90 saves and posting three shutouts for the Greyhounds (7-9-2). He currently sits in third place in the Moravian record book with a 1.69 career goals-against average (stats began in 1989).
"Congratulations to Brian Boland for his selection to the Landmark Conference All-Sportsmanship Team," said head coach Todd Ervin. "Brian is the consummate team player as well as an outstanding individual talent. His team-first mentality, ability to inspire his teammates and tireless work rate sets a great standard for the rest of our squad to aspire to. There is no one more deserving of this award and I'm thrilled for Brian."
Women's Soccer
Sophomore defender Marlene Lopes has been named to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team as the representative for Moravian women's soccer. Lopes was a staple on the Greyhound (7-10-3) defense that recorded a 1.44 goals-against average and six shutouts in 2013. The sophomore also registered her first career point by picking up an assist against Goucher College in the regular-season finale, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
"Marlene is an all-around fantastic young woman," said head coach Brienne Smith. "She is respectful both on and off the field, yet she plays with so much intensity. She isn't afraid to play tough, but is the first kid to help an opponent up off the ground."
Field Hockey
Senior forward Chelsea Grotyohann is the field hockey team's 2013 recipient of the All-Sportsmanship honor. She played and started in every game for the Greyhounds (9-8) this season. Grotyohann was second on the team in goal scoring with seven, and her three assists this season gave her 15 for her career, which is tied for fourth all-time at Moravian. She was the Greyhounds' corner play specialist and picked up two game-winning goals this season.
"Chelsea was a four-year starter and team captain this year," said head coach Amy Endler. "She is the heart of our team at Moravian. Chelsea is always positive and while she is very competitive, she would never step over the bounds of what is fair during the course of the game."
Volleyball
Sophomore libero Andrea Giardina has been named to the All-Sportsmanship Team from Moravian volleyball. Giardina took over the integral libero position toward the end of the 2013 season for the Greyhounds (12-22) and flourished in the role. She played in every match for Moravian and ended the season with 293 digs, 12 service aces and 23 assists.
"Andi played as a defensive specialist for most of the season at right back," said head coach Shelley Bauder. "She stepped into the libero role and has risen to the occasion and played very well. She is one of the most coachable players on the team and has earned the respect of her teammates and coaches."
Cross Country
Junior Alec Duncan is the 2013 men's cross country selection to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team. Duncan turned in the best time of his career at the Princeton University Invitational this season with a time of 26:25 in the 8,000-meter run. His seventh place finish at the 2013 Landmark Conference Championships in Washington, D.C. earned Duncan his third consecutive All-Conference First Team award.
Junior Emily Lambright has been named to the All-Sportsmanship Team from the women's cross country program. Lambright was a consistent force for the Greyhounds, who won their second Landmark Conference crown in three years this fall. The Hounds finished in 11th place out of 52 teams at the NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier at Lehigh University, where Lambright turned in a personal record time of 23:09 in the 6,000-meter run. She earned All-Conference First Team honors this season after making Second Team her freshman year.
"Alec and Emily are both very even keeled people who understand the highs and lows that runners experience after every race," said head coach Jesse Baumann. "Consequently, they don't gloat if they perform well, or sulk if they have an off day. They're very cognizant of how their competition is doing throughout the year, and as a result that gives them a new respect for the work that other runners put in throughout the year. I always see them wishing others good luck at the line, and congratulating their competition as soon as the race or meet is over."
