Matz Selected as Landmark Softball Senior Scholar-Athlete

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior second baseman Eavan Matz has been selected as the 2014 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for Softball.

The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors. Chosen at the conclusion of each sport season, the 10 spring honorees are being announced this week and next week.

"Eavan is an outstanding young woman who has experienced much success not only on the softball field, but also as a campus leader and Dean's List student," stated Head Coach John Byrne. "She exemplifies all the accomplishments of a true student-athlete."

Matz helped lead the Greyhounds to a 29-8 record this spring and a 9-3 mark in the Landmark regular season to earn the second seed in the Landmark Tournament. It was the 21st straight season the program has won at least 23 games and the 20th consecutive season reaching the postseason.

On the field, Matz hit .388 with 26 hits in her third year as the Greyhounds' starting second baseman. She was just one of two players to start all 37 games this spring, and Matz also added 13 runs, five doubles, a home run, the first of her career dating back to childhood, and 17 RBIs. Matz was honored on the Landmark All-Conference First Team this season, and she made 88 putouts and 57 assists in 150 chances in the field.

Matz finished her career with a .319 average in 148 games with 58 hits, 38 runs, six doubles, a triple, a homer and 32 RBIs over four seasons. She also had 285 putouts and 212 assists in 519 chances at second base.

Off the field, Matz has maintained a 3.78 GPA in management with a minor in industrial organizational psychology. Matz, who made Moravian's Dean's List in each of her eight semesters, studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain in fall 2012.

During her career, Matz was named to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll three times, and she was on the 2013 Landmark Spring All-Academic Team. Matz is also a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete. She was also active on campus as a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon international honor society for economics, a member of Moravian's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a student representative to the Environmental, Health & Safety Committee and worked as a peer associate in the Career Center.
