Softball Scores 28 Runs in Sweep of Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The Moravian College softball team scored 28 runs in over 10 innings, sweeping host the College of Staten Island, 14-2 and 14-1, in a pair of five-inning non-conference games Friday.

The Greyhounds improve to 24-6 on the year and have won at least 23 games in each of Head Coach John Byrne's 21 seasons at the helm of the program. The games were also the ninth and tenth of the season that saw the Hounds score more than 10 runs.

Moravian opened the scoring in the first contest with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Senior right fielder Miranda Sergas connected on an RBI double to score the first run of the game, and Sergas scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Taylor Mihalik.

The Dolphins answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first frame including one on a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2.

The Greyhounds retook the lead for good in the top of the second with five more runs for a 7-2 lead. Senior second baseman Eavan Matz had an RBI single before Sergas connected on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded and a third run scored on a Staten Island error. Mihalik drove in Sergas for the second straight inning with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Moravian added six more runs in the top half of the third for a 13-2 advantage. Junior pitcher/designated player Lizzie Mack led off with a double and scored on a two-run homer by senior third baseman Rachel DeLucia, her third round-tripper of the season. Matz and Sergas had RBI singles before junior first baseman Jenn Dalickas had an RBI single Mack finished off the inning with an RBI ground out.

The Hounds finished the scoring with a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from senior outfielder Melissa Cottone.

The Greyhounds had a 15-7 advantage in hits in the opener with Sergas going 3-for-4. Matz was 2-for-2 while DeLucia and sophomore left fielder Mary Schlosbon were both 2-for-3.

Sophomore Carsin Conner improved to 5-2 in the circle for Moravian, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters in 4.2 innings of action.

In the second game, the Greyhounds jumped out again to a lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on an RBI single by Mihalik.

For the second straight contest, Staten Island tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, knotting the score at 1-1 with an RBI single.

Moravian moved back in front with a run in the top of the second when Matz reached on an RBI fielder's choice.

The Greyhounds tacked on four more runs in the third for a 6-1 advantage. Dalickas connected on a two-run homer to left center field, her team-leading ninth home run of the season while DeLucia had a two-RBI double in the inning.

Moravian pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple from Sergas and an RBI ground out from Mihalik.

The Hounds finished off the scoring in the second game with six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman pinch hitter Julie Siragusa started the scoring with a two-RBI double, and Cottone followed with another two-RBI double. Sergas ripped an RBI single while sophomore pitcher Lindsay Sullivan drove in the final run with an RBI single through the left side.

Moravian had a 13-3 hit advantage in the second contest with senior designated player Cassie Ernst going 3-for-4. Sullivan and Sergas were both 2-for-3.

Sullivan remained undefeated in the circle, improving to 6-0 after allowing a run on three hits and a walk.

The Greyhounds are slated to return to action on Tuesday, April 22 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton beginning at 4:00 p.m.
