Sergas & Ernst Named 2014 Moravian Softball Captains

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Seniors Miranda Sergas and Cassie Ernst have been selected as captains of the 2014 Moravian College softball team.

Ernst, a catcher and infielder for the Greyhounds, is a two-time Landmark All-Conference First Team honoree, while being named to the NFCA All-East Region First Team and ECAC South All-Star Second Team after her sophomore season. She was selected to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team her freshman year.

"Cassie, in addition to being a talented player, possesses excellent field presence and leads by example in all phases of the game," said 21st-year head coach John Byrne.

Ernst played in and started all 42 games last season for the Greyhounds, who finished the 2013 campaign with a 30-12 record. The durable senior led the team with a .548 on-base percentage, while being hit with 26 pitches, an NCAA Division III record.

Ernst had a .379 (39-for-103) batting average last spring to go with a .573 slugging percentage. At the plate, she had 32 total runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 15 walks. With the glove, Ernst boasted a perfect fielding percentage with 112 putouts and 13 assists.

Sergas, a sure-handed outfielder and consistent hitter, has been awarded Landmark All-Conference First Team honors all three years at Moravian.

"Miranda is a fiery, vocal and talented player that leads by her attitude and effort both on and off the field," Byrne said.

On the field last season, Sergas played in and started 41 games. She had a .381 (43-for-113) batting average, a .478 slugging percentage and a .440 on-base percentage. Sergas had 28 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple and 20 RBIs in 2013 while only making one error in the outfield. She led the team last spring in sacrifice slap hits with 18.

Byrne is confident that his 2014 captains' numbers speak for themselves, but the importance of their intangible qualities cannot be understated when forecasting the success of the upcoming season.

"They both bring a wealth of playing experience and leadership capability to their positions of softball captains for the 2014 season," Byrne said. "During their four years, Cassie and Miranda have come to understand and value the success and traditions associated with our softball program. Under their leadership, I look forward to very promising 2014 season."
